Our unique multi-disciplinary approach teams lawyers, accountants and therapists as mediators to help families resolve conflicts and couples resolve divorce and custody issues in a sane, sensible and fair way at a reasonable cost.
We use a unique co-mediation model, teaming therapist-mediators with attorney-mediators in each mediation session.

We’re adding to our team of mediators and are looking for a true believer in the mediation process who’s excited to work collaboratively with the other mediators in our office to create this country’s premier mediation firm.

The ideal candidate is a California licensed attorney with at least 1 year of family law experience who has attended a basic 40-hour mediation training course. Prior mediation experience is helpful. This is an ideal position for a family law attorney who is in transition (e.g., leaving a larger firm to start a solo practice, desiring part time work, transitioning back into the workforce after an absence, etc.).

Our independent contractors are engaged on an as-needed basis at our office in Playa del Rey. Mediations are generally scheduled in 3-hour time blocks (e.g., $100 x 3 hours).

Initially we anticipate 1-4 mediations per week (3-12 hours of mediation time), mostly during the afternoons. Weekend and afternoon availability is very desirable.

Peace Talks will provide training in our mediation model. Because we’re specifically seeking seasoned professionals who are looking to round out their practices, we anticipate that you will work as an IC as your schedule permits. There is no minimum time commitment.

The ideal candidate will be a California licensed therapist (Ph.D., Psy.D., LMFT, LCSW) with at least 40 hours of mediation training (preferably family law mediation training), and parenting plan mediation experience. Expertise in child development and parenting plans is also important. Applications will also be considered from California pre-licensed therapists with substantial mediation experience. You are required to arrive 30 minutes prior to a scheduled session and stay 30 minutes afterwards, neither of which are compensated.

Peace Talks is working on a franchise and licensing offering, and as a result you will be required to sign a non-disclosure and non-compete agreement. Review copies are available upon request.
• Peace Talks will also perform a background check, so if that makes you uncomfortable, this position isn’t for you.
• You are uncomfortable using e-mail and basic computer programs.
• You hate to write, even when templates and training are provided.
• You are a procrastinator and don’t check e-mail very often, or if you can’t write and return the mediation summary letters within 48 hours of the conclusion of the mediation session.

For those with an interest, projects could also include (voluntary, not mandatory):

Counselor Mediator
Open Adoption & Family Services

Open Adoption & Family Services (OA&FS) is a nonprofit agency with a progressive approach to building healthy families. The agency supports birthparents in making decisions about parenthood in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. When the choice is adoption, we facilitate child-centered open adoptions.

Child-centered open adoption begins with a close and trusting relationship between birthparents and adoptive parents. This unique partnership acknowledges not only the parties’ mutual respect and shared love for the child, but also their separate and distinct roles. Birthparents and adoptive families create healthy long-term relationships addressing the ongoing needs of the child. Ongoing contact enables birthparents to see for themselves that the child is thriving in the adoptive home. This helps them feel at peace with the adoption. Secure in the knowledge that the birthparents fully support the adoption, adoptive parents are free to welcome birthparents into their lives.

OA&FS is licensed in Oregon and Washington, with offices in Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Medford and a contracted social worker in eastern OR. At Open Adoption and Family Services, we take pride in providing comprehensive services to our clients. We are the premier Northwest adoption agency, and we have over 22 years experience facilitating child-centered open adoptions. OA&FS completes the most domestic infant and newborn adoptions in Oregon and Washington.

We continually re-evaluate and upgrade our services through client surveys, staff/board committees and staff meetings. Current projects include reaching out to the Latino communities and expanding into the tri-cities area of eastern WA.

*** We are a very progressive adoption agency. We are pro-choice and we work with same sex, as well as heterosexual, adoptive parents. Please check out our website: www.openadopt.org .

Executive Director, Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana

Description of Organization
The Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana (JJPL) is a statewide non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to reforming Louisiana’s juvenile justice system. When JJPL opened in 1997, it pursued three reform objectives in Louisiana’s delinquency system: improve indigent defense; challenge unconstitutional conditions of confinement; and increase community based-alternatives to incarceration. Since then, JJPL has driven all private, for-profit juvenile prisons out of the state, forced the state to close two juvenile prisons, brought litigation and, with the U.S. Department of Justice, negotiated a settlement with the State that dramatically improved many aspects of the conditions of confinement for Louisiana’s youth; helped to pass major state juvenile justice reform legislation, launched a statewide family advocacy organization and, most recently, established a model juvenile defender office in New Orleans. The population of incarcerated youth in Louisiana fell from about 1,900 in 1998 when JJPL first opened its doors to about 450 in December 2006.

JJPL’s mission is to transform the juvenile justice system into one that builds on the strengths of young people, families and communities in order to instill hope and to ensure that children are given the greatest opportunities to grow and thrive. When it first began, JJPL used litigation in combination with media advocacy to drive juvenile justice reform. Today, JJPL litigates in both federal and state courts on behalf of youth and engages in other forms of legal advocacy including appellate work, administrative hearings and amicus briefs. In addition, JJPL educates policy makers and politicians on the need for reform, coordinates with parents and other concerned citizens to ensure their visibility and participation in the process, and aggressively executes media strategies in order that the state is held accountable for its treatment of youth.

JJPL began with a small amount of general support primarily from the Southern Poverty Law Center. Today its budget is roughly $1 million annually and it is supported by grants from several national foundations. With the recent spin off from JJPL of FFLIC (Families and Friends of Incarcerated Children) and the model juvenile defender office (Juvenile Regional Services), JJPL currently has a staff of seven. The office is based in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Position Responsibilities
While JJPL has achieved significant reforms, vigilant advocacy is required to sustain them over time. Moreover, challenges for children in or at-risk of entering Louisiana’s juvenile justice system continue. The organization is poised to grow and JJPL is seeking a dedicated and experienced leader to move the organization forward. The executive director must be committed to JJPL’s mission and recognize and appreciate the humanity of its clients, their families and their communities. JJPL is a collaborative, creative environment that strives to develop projects that further its mission; each staff member is respected as a resource for the creation and generation of project ideas as well as new projects. Specific responsibilities of the ED include:

  1. Visioning & Strategic Planning: This includes evaluation, organizational growth and oversight for office policies and structure.
  2. Personnel: Recruitment and hiring; establishment of training, supervision, management and staff evaluation protocols; and staff professional development.
  3. Fundraising and Budgetary Responsibilities: Soliciting grants and maintaining ongoing relationships with funders; ensuring sufficient funding for all projects and operations; oversight, management and maintenance of budget with Financial Officer; responsible for office assets, expenditures, salaries, benefits, and oversight of annual reports and audits.
  4. Oversight of Office Management: Direct supervision of office administration.
  5. Board Development: Responsible for reports, communications and coordination with Board of Directors; and, with Board of Directors, recruitment of new board members.
  6. Litigation and Project-Specific Supervision and Management: Maintain regular contact and coordinate with staff in identifying and implementing legal advocacy strategies consistent with best practice standards for representation; supervise and manage staff on various projects and work with staff to develop project action and evaluation plans.
  7. Public Relations and Media: Serve as primary media contact for JJPL and maintain ongoing relationships with press; prepare press releases and conduct other public relations as determined and/or assign PR contacts on project-specific basis.

Job Qualifications
The executive director of JJPL must have fundraising experience as well as experience managing within or directing a nonprofit organization. The executive director must be a good strategic thinker and understand how to craft and move a policy reform agenda. He or she should be creative, a team player, and have the skills to both work with government and advocate for change when required. Experience with juvenile justice issues is preferred, as is a law degree and litigation experience. Experience with Louisiana political culture is also a plus. JJPL values the diversity of its clients, staff members, volunteers and community members. Salary is commensurate with experience, generous benefits included.
